Three songs..

Today, celebrate three songs that are significant to you.

Three songs? Even though I have been singing most of my life when someone asks me to name songs I blank, completely and utterly blank! This is why I suck at Trivia nights. I can sing you the song and know the lyrics but I couldn't tell you the name of the song nor the artist in the 10 seconds you hear of it.

Music in my life has been somewhat diverse. I'm grateful for this because it means that I'm appreciative of most genres. I grew up singing, initially in primary school, through a mixture of the Victorian Children's Choir and also at our local church (yes I was made to go to church until I was 18 years old, so I made it less of a drag by being the singer). With the Victorian Children's Choir, we sang a vast array of genres and I got to be part of some great experiences: AFL Grand Final half time performances, a singing tour around USA and England where we got to sing with the Philadelphia Boys Choir, we sang at Disneyland and then Westminster Abbey in London.

In high school I continued, for most part, with the Victorian Children's Choir (stopped Year 10), and also commenced private classical singing lessons which morphed into studying VCE Music and completing singing Exams.

After high school I sang with the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and was part of some great performances: Handel's Messiah, Verdi's Requiem (goose-bumps just thinking about parts of this performance) and Mahler's Choir of 1000 with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Melbourne Exhibition Building!

I only stayed in the RMPC for two years as I didn't find it personally challenging, and it wasn't really social for me as I was the youngest person there. I then ventured into Blues and Jazz choral singing with Once More with Feeling. This choir disbanded (man can male singers be moody!) and the women re-grouped as Ladybird Blues. I have fond memories of singing at the Collingwood Farmers Market and singing Christmas Carols walking around the Bentleigh shopping district. We sang a lot of my favourite kind of music, popular crooner and broadway tunes: Chattanooga Choo Choo, Let's Do it Let's Fall in Love, Summertime, Night and Day just to name a few.

Eventually I left this group. I wanted to give it a go doing a duo but this was disbanded shortly after and I haven't sung since. I think it's been almost 4, maybe even 5 years now.

I honestly didn't think I could just list three songs. And to be honest I really can't. The whole going blank thing doesn't help. But these three songs are lingering in my head right now so I will tell you about them

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Over The Rainbow & What A Wonderful World

I love this song. I love the two original songs too but there is just something about this guy strumming his little ukulele and singing so genuinely. It is important to note that I have told my sister and Simon that I want this to be the song played at my funeral. Some of you might think that's morbid, but I don't.

Labrinth feat. Emeli Sandé - Beneath Your Beautiful

This is our wedding song. Not all the lyrics are applicable, but the main message is. As some of you know from reading my blog I was a very angry, negative person. Simon luckily met me on the outer edge of this as my personal development was making inroads and positive changes. I get a lump in my throat every time I hear this song xxoo

Pharrell Williams – Happy

I don't really think I need to explain this song. It has become a worldwide phenomena. But the feeling that this song imbues within my bones, my skin, my heart and smile it what I love about music.

Closing time... I will always have fond memories of Christmas Carols, even the Mariah Carey ones. O Holy Night will always give me goosebumps and I fall in love with Christmas every year when I here old crooner carols. I have fond memories of my friend Alex head-butting me as he lovingly sang and swayed to Throw You Arms around Me (Hunters and Collectors). I have fond memories of being taken to my first National Folk Festival in Canberra and opening my eyes to a whole other world of music. I have fond memories of being introduced to live music in Melbourne (not long before we left) with The Nymphs (thanks Melly xx). Memories... my good friend Fleur said that it's often the people associated with the music that means the most. I agree, lots of songs, lots of people and lots of memories. Did I mention songs associated to TV shows and movies? Oh I think you get the drift now J

I will always love music, and how it can make you feel just on its own xx
