Do you have a tattoo? If so, what’s the story behind your ink? If you don’t have a tattoo, what might you consider getting emblazoned on your skin?
I can remember sitting in the common room in high school really wanting a tongue ring and a tattoo. I don't specifically remember anyone getting tattoos when we were in school but I do remember one girl getting a tongue ring and I was very jealous.
I got the tongue ring first, about a year after leaving school (before they became "popular"). I remember the moment my Dad noticed it. He went mental! Not only because I had it done but because I had it done without telling them, or "asking permission". I still remember the moment he decided he liked it, he-he, silly Dad's hey.
I still felt strongly about getting a tattoo but I couldn't pin point exactly what it was that I wanted so I kept putting it off.
Due to different jobs and their associated "health and safety" I eventually got rid of the tongue ring as it grew over from having to leave it out for too many days in a row. I did get it re-done once but the second time I just knew it was time to let it go.
I think there is no real "meaning" to a tongue ring. It was just something I wanted. However a tattoo to me held meaning. It was something I was going to have to be happy with for the rest of my life.
10 years after deciding I wanted a tattoo I finally got two on my back! The two things that had meaning for "me". My star-sign, Capricorn and the meaning of my name Pure Light (Katharine Ilona (Helen)).
I don't think I am or have been a very "Pure Light" person but it is something I work towards every day and it was something individual to me and something that had an explainable meaning.
I find it quite amusing how close my personality traits are reflected in my star sign. It has been a great conversation piece with some special friends over the years. I know you're not meant to let things like star signs and personality types (e.g. Myers Briggs) define who you are but I do chuckle to myself when I read the list:
Yes I am. As mentioned in my previous blog piece I have an affinity with Willow trees now and would really love to get a tattoo of a willow tree drawing on my back/shoulder.
So far my inspiration comes from this sketch I found. I cannot draw so I need to find someone who can to make more of this basic sketch and give it a little more life and depth but still be transferable as a tattoo and I don't want it in red. Either natural or black. So if you know anyone who can draw and lives in the Netherlands let me know!
